About Paul Schrader

Paul Schrader, a towering figure in American cinema, has made an indelible mark as both a screenwriter and director. Born on July 22, 1946, Schrader's deep passion for film was ignited early on, inspired by auteurs like Robert Bresson and Yasujirō Ozu.

After earning a BA in philosophy from Calvin College and an MFA from UCLA Film School, Schrader quickly rose to prominence in the 1970s with his evocative screenplays. His screenplay for Taxi Driver (1976) earned him widespread acclaim and an Academy Award nomination. His collaboration with Martin Scorsese continued with Raging Bull (1980), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), and Bringing out the Dead (1999).

As a director, Schrader's vision is uncompromising and deeply introspective. Films like American Gigolo (1980), Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters (1985), and Light Sleeper (1992) showcase his keen eye for visual storytelling and complex character studies, delving into themes of alienation, guilt, and redemption. His filmography is a testament to his unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and uncompromising vision. Schrader has described three of his recent films as a loose trilogy: First Reformed (2017), The Card Counter (2021), and Master Gardener (2022).

Beyond his work in cinema, Schrader is also an esteemed author, penning insightful essays on film theory and criticism. In recognition of his contributions to the art of filmmaking, Schrader has received numerous accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Locarno Film Festival. His legacy as a pioneering writer and director continues to inspire generations of filmmakers, creatives and audiences around the globe.

Throughout his career, Schrader has tackled controversial subjects, pushing the boundaries of cinematic expression. Nearly 50 years after Taxi Driver, Shrader continues to create groundbreaking work. His latest film, Oh Canada!, which he wrote and directed and stars Richard Gere, Jacob Elordi and Uma Thurman, premiered weeks ago at 2024 Cannes FIlm Festival.
